Earthquakes
It is unusual for our area to experience a small or moderate earthquake, however they are known to happen and quite often when they do we do not feel them. In keeping with the motto “Prepare today for a safer tomorrow” we need to consider earthquakes as a possibility. Did you know that an earthquake can be felt up to 500 km away? In fact many people felt and remember the earthquake in Ottawa and Quebec on June 23, 2010. This is a reminder to always be ready for the unexpected.
Information on what you need to know is provided below, however you may wish to check out the Government of Canada’s Site or the Simcoe Muskoka Emergency Site for more information on how to prepare for such an event as well as some interesting facts.
Small or moderate earthquakes may occur and are likely to only last a few seconds. Although they are not expected to present an emergency, they can cause damage or injury from falling objects. During a small or moderate earthquake you may feel a slight shake or nothing at all; lights and objects will probably rattle and shift on the walls or on the shelves. You may wish to consider affixing mirrors, paintings and other objects securely to the wall; or anti skid pads under tv’s, computers and small appliances. This will help ensure that everything is kept in its place during such and event, but will also help protect your property if it was accidentally bumped.
