Marriage Licencing

WHERE CAN I OBTAIN A MARRIAGE LICENCE?
Marriage licences may be obtained from the Customer Service area of the Town Hall, Monday to Friday, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
You will need to bring in a completed Marriage Licence Application Form which can be downloaded by clicking on the following link, or by visiting the Customer Service Division at the Town Hall.

Both applicants must complete and sign the Application Form but only one applicant needs to be present when delivering the completed form to the Town Offices. A marriage licence can only be issued to the applicant(s).
HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?
The Licence Fee is $140.00. Please note that payment must be in the form of cash or debit. Cheques will not be accepted.
WHAT DO I NEED TO BRING FOR IDENTIFICATION
Applicants will be requested to provide original identification for both applicants. Two (2) pieces of identification must be shown for each party confirming name, birth date and signature. The following identification is acceptable:
A current passport (which includes a photo) or an original birth certificate
PLUS
One piece of government issued photo identification - i.e. driver's license, health card, age of majority card, record of Immigrant Landing or Canadian Citizenship card, etc., is required for each applicant. If you do not have photo identification, you will be required to provide an additional piece of identification which has your name and current address.
Identification of both applicants is required prior to processing the licencing - even if only one applicant is bringing in the application.
If presenting documents in a language other than English, they must be supported by translation documentation by an authorized translator. The documentation must bear the name and signature of the translator.
HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO GET THE LICENSE?
Marriage Licences are typically prepared within two business days.
WHAT ARE THE AGE REQUIREMENTS
Both applicants must be 18 years of age or older. If you are 16 or 17 years of age, parental consent is required. Please contact the Clerk's Department at the Town of Innisfil at 705-436-3710 for further information. If you are under the age of 16 years you may not marry in the Province of Ontario.
DIVORCED APPLICANTS
Applicants who have been previously married will be required to provide the following:
If divorced within Canada, you must provide either the original or a certified copy of the Decree Absolute or Certificate of Divorce. Certification may be obtained through the Courts. These documents will be returned to you immediately.
If you were divorced, or your marriage was dissolved or annulled outside of Canada, you must obtain authorization from the Minister of Government Services before a marriage licence can be issued to you. Please visit the Service Ontario website or contact the Clerk's Office at 436-3710 to obtain further information.
CITIZENSHIP/RESIDENCY
There are no citizenship or residency requirements when applying for a marriage licence in Ontario.
MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS
Blood tests or medical certificates are not required for a marriage licence in Ontario.
VALIDITY/EXPIRY DATE
A marriage licence is valid anywhere in Ontario for three months from the date of issue.
PUBLICATIONS OF BANNS
A marriage may be solemnized under the authority of the publication of banns. If you are having a religious ceremony, please check with the clergy prior to purchasing a marriage licence.
CIVIL MARRIAGE SERVICES INFORMATION
A civil marriage ceremony can be performed by the Municipal Clerk or designate in the Council Chambers at the Town Hall.
The Council Chambers has been reserved Friday afternoons, between the hours of 1:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. for Civil Marriage Ceremonies. Other dates, times and locations may be accommodated dependent upon the availability of the Municipal Clerk, or designate, and that sufficient notice is provided.
The fee for the civil ceremony is $250 and payment must be received prior to the service taking place.
Due to the civil nature of this service, interested parties must be aware that there cannot be any religious connotation to the service whatsoever.
If you are interested in having your marriage ceremony at the Town Hall, you will be required to meet with the Town Clerk at least one week prior to the ceremony at which time the guidelines will be reviewed and the actual service agreed upon.
