BIOSOLIDS MANAGEMENT - Nutrient Soil Conditioning |
| ATTENTION FARMERS |
| The Town of Innisfil is seeking agricultural land for the application of biosolids generated by our
wastewater treatment facility. With the expensive costs of chemical fertilizers, applying biosolids under
our Nutrient Management Program reduces costs for the farmer and allows us to utilize a byproduct in
an environmentally safe manner. |
| Wastewater treatment involves the separation of liquids that can be processed and reintroduced into
the hydrologic cycle, and solids which are decomposed and sterilized by natural micro-organisms.
When processing of the solids is complete, and the material meets strict quality standards, it is called a
biosolid. |
| Organic biosolids contain fertilizer constituents including nitrogen, phosphorous and micronutrients in
forms that are easily utilized through plant uptake. Because plants are continuously removing these
essential nutrients, they need to be recycled back into the soil. Soil conditioning is an important part of
the growing process and crops such as field corn, hay, and pasture greatly benefit and are of no cost to
the landowner. |
| Biosolids recycling is recognized by the agricultural community as a beneficial alternative to landfill
disposal and incineration. The Town of Innisfil biosolids management program is strictly enforced and
regulated by the Ministry of the Environment (MOE) and the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Food
(OMAF) and is motivated by the health and wellbeing of our community. |
| The town also contracts specialists for application who work closely with us and the regulating bodies to
effectively condition a site at the farmer’s discretion and with no impact to the surrounding environment. |
